The Age of Reason

An Enlightenment Salon

Committee Description

Discontent is growing amongst the French people, the lower and middle classes want freedom, but what is freedom and what does it mean to have it? This will be the question for the philosophers, writers, artists, and statesmen of mid-18th century France. A movement known as the Enlightenment is spreading across Europe,  taking root in the underground presses and circles of intellectuals and common men alike, jump-starting necessary conversations surrounding human rights, democracy, and justice. In the gathering places of salons, diverse influential figures will be able to join forces to contest the oppression of absolute monarchy, debate and define the bounds of a liberated society, stoke revolutionary sentiments, and ultimately shape the freedoms of mankind in Western society.

Samuel Wong

Chair

Hi everyone! My name is Samuel, I am currently completing my BCL/JD at McGill University’s faculty of law. I especially enjoyed my time with MariMUN, both with the club and the conference! I was in the secretariat for both years in Cégep and had the privilege to attend World MUN in Paris with many dear friends. In terms of important advice, definitely bring chargers for your devices! All jokes aside, my most important piece of advice is to take risks. Whether that be raising your placard for the first time, proposing a major amendment to a paper, or even approaching a block, do not let yourself be intimidated and allow yourself to learn from your experiences!

Alessia Poirier

Vice Chair

My name is Alessia Poirier, and I’m a first year Law student at Université de Sherbrooke. I proudly served as MariMUN’s president in 2022-2023, and I loved it so much I couldn’t wait to be back for this year’s conference. Fun fact: I had barely been doing MUN for a few months when I got my position as an executive. So, as advice to all delegates, never underestimate yourselves and aim for your craziest goals, both in and out of committee!
