Clashes of ideologies, breaking the status quo, and cooperation in the face of chaos: this year, MariMUN has chosen to develop a theme, which seeks to address and analyse the crossroads of history through the diverse scopes of our committees. “Turning Points in History: A World in Crisis”—dives headfirst into moments of great political, social, and cultural upheaval both past and present to understand the pivotal innovations or catastrophes; that have ultimately initiated societal change. After all, whether positive or negative, it is the breaking points of history that have defined us.

But what is it that these events can teach us, and what will your contribution be? 

You may join the great philosophes of the 18th century debating human rights and democracy or the roundtables of CEOs and musical artists during the digital revolution navigating the role of technology in art. Maybe you are a military general or a codebreaker in 1904, amidst the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese war, kickstarting a shift in international power and the global movement towards decolonization. Perhaps in 2024, it’s finally time for us to critically reform our relationship with each other and the environment to understand how to create a sustainable and equitable future for all.
