Dystopian Apocalypse

Final Countdown

Committee Description

All around is destruction, the remnants of a city once teeming with life, now reduced to rubble and ruin. The vines have taken over, the animals reclaimed their land. Decay has set in.

Time is unknown. Has it been days, months, or years since the onslaught of this way of living where the economy collapsed, city-wide electricity flickered out for good, and food became scarce? No one is safe and no one can trust one another.

Rumours creep their way into and around the different bases and factions. A plague, they say, a curse, an irreversible one that ravages and tears apart its hosts, eating you whole from the inside. No one truly knows what is at play here, only that they must avoid the phenomenon at all costs. After all, there is no cure, they say.

But is that the truth?

Olivia Diamontopoulos

Crisis Director

Hi everyone! My name is Olivia Diamantopoulos and I am the Crisis Director of the Dystopian Apocalyptic Crisis of MariMUN 2024. I’m currently a second-year Cegep student studying Law, Society, and Justice. My best piece of advice from my model UN experience is opening hooks are so useful, as the committees get exhausted form debating about the topic by the end of day and you want to be able to still grab the attention of the room. A fun fact about me is that the rehabilitated turtle I sponsor in Georgia just had babies!

Thanks!

Samah Khandkar

Chair

Samah Khandker (she/her) is a Political Science student still trying to figure out whether she wants to become a journalist, a lawyer, a teacher or a politician. As a former MariMUN president, Samah is ecstatic to return to her alma mater in order to give back to the club that made her time at Marianopolis so memorable. A fun fact about Samah is that she has taught MUN to students all around the world (in countries such as, but not limited to: the United Arab Emirates, India, and South Korea). In her free time, Samah enjoys playing board games, petting cats, and attending concerts. Her advice to delegates is to remember that “MUN is a marathon, not a sprint” and that the Best Delegates are the ones who exude their passion for MUN throughout the entire conference weekend.

Trisha Chakrabarty

Assistant Crisis Director

Meet Trisha, a second year Arts and Science student at Marianopolis. She embarked on her Model UN journey with MariMUN, where she discovered her love of crafting crisis notes and sharing mysterious proverbs in speeches. Now, as ACD for the first time, Trisha is eager to dive into the backrooms and absorb the creativity from everyone's cool ideas!

Kathryn Bachtold

Vice Chair

Kathryn is a first-year Psychology major at Concordia University that will have the utmost privilege of serving as Vice Chair of this year’s MariMun The Final Countdown crisis. Kathryn’s involvement and commitment to Model UN further developed when she had the honor of taking on the role of USG of Crises last year, during MariMun’s 36th iteration. Her first experience in Model UN was being a delegate in a SSUNS’ crisis committee, where she fell in love with the twist, turns and endless possibilities of character arcs, creative debating and surprising plot twists.

Kathryn believes that the greatest gifts that crisis can give are newfound confidence in yourself and a belief in outside the box solutions that many politicians do not dare to even consider. Crisis is where the trend setters of the political world grow to become the solutions that our future needs. Speak loud, negotiate your heart out and above all, have fun!
